On March 14, 2024, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police raided and shut down Minds Insider Private Limited, an illegal tech support scam call center where employees posed as Microsoft to deceive victims into subscribing to their “Windows-recommend cybersecurity” Waredot.
The raid was specifically conducted at the Mohan Co-operative Industrial Estate in southeast Delhi, where they were operating under the leadership of 42-year-old Noida resident Prakash Vishwakarma.
- The company has been charged with identity theft (2008 IT Amendment, Sec. 66C), cheating by personation by using computer resource (2008 IT Amendment, Sec. 66D) and cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property (Indian Penal Code, Sec. 420)
- Two people were arrested during the raid: Prakash Vishwakarma and Delhi resident Barkatullah Khan., 38 additional telecallers were also bound to the case, and police are also looking into an American bank account that was managed by Deepankar Jana.
- The call center’s server has since been shut down and the computers used to facilitate their scam have been seized for a forensic investigation.
- Microsoft is also actively working on revoking the call center’s EV certificate.
