  • Earlier today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled that AI-generated robocalls violate the Telephone Consumer Protection Act after New Hampshire officials launched an investigation into a robocall using an AI-generated voice of President Biden to urge voters not to vote in the primary.
  • AI-generated robocalls could be regulated under the same standard as typical telemarketing robocalls. The fraudsters can be fined as much as $20,000/call.
  • According to the Associated Press, this ruling also opens the door for recipients to file lawsuits and give state attorneys general a new mechanism to crack down on violators.

UPDATE: The illegal robocall using an AI-generated voice of President Biden has been traced back to Paul David Carpenter, a magician from New Orleans, Louisiana who worked on ballot access for Biden’s current opponent in the Democratic primaries, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Mn3).
