The scammers sent us a “time-sensitive” letter similar to the one pictured above, informing us that the property’s “home warranty may be expiring or have already expired.” When I called the number listed on the letter, the scammers answered as the “Home Warranty Division” and revealed the true identity of their company as Home Defense USA, LLC, which is listed on the Better Business Bureau as operating out of a USPS PO box in St. Louis, Missouri and on Bizapedia as operating out of the residence of their organizer, Blase Frick.
User complaints on their BBB listing indicate patterns of fraudulent activity, such as:
- Operating under a false business name and attempting to phish personal information.
- Sending threatening letters and having their representatives badger the recipients.
- Sending fraudulent “final notices” that mentions the recipients’ mortgage lenders.
- Refusing to cancel their policies by falsely claiming it was “suspended” and automatically withdrawing $198 at a later time.
An additional complaint on Indeed revealed that the company’s employees were encouraged to use high-pressure sales tactics in order to close deals and that the managers often reward salespeople for hitting their targets.
Frick is also listed as
- The organizer of Auto Armor, LLC
- The organizer and manager of BF Equity, LLC
- The organizer of BF Investments, LLC
- The Vice President of Mortgage Lending at the Mutual of Omaha, which has known ties to Medicare scam organizations Everything Medicare, LLC and Symmetry Financial
While Mutual of Omaha Mortgage, Inc. is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with a grade of A+, there is an active alert for the company after they were ordered to pay an administrative fine of $21,375 to the Florida Office of Financial Regulation. This stems from allegations that the company operated a mortgage lender branch between January 1, 2020 and April 8, 2020 without a proper license.
The listing also reveals the company does business as:
- Mutual of Omaha Reverse Mortgage
- Retirement Funding Solutions
- Synergy One Lending, Inc.
On September 27, 2024, Mutual of Omaha Mortgage, Inc. was sued by Longbridge Financial, LLC in the Southern District of California for “false representation of goods sold in interstate commerce.” The other co-defendants in the case include Review Counsel, LLC and Advisory Institute, LLC.
The company was also sued for violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act in the Southern District of California after the plaintiff, David Baesel from Parker, Florida, received unsolicited cold calls while his number was on the do-not-call registry. The case was dismissed with prejudice on June 16, 2021.
The company was also sued for TCPA violations in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
