On October 4, 2024, the Barnstable Police and Massachusetts State Police Detectives Units arrested 24-year-old Yuxin Fu at the JFK International Airport in Queens, New York for serving as a money mule for a Social Security scam.
- Police were made aware of the scam in December 2022, when a Marstons Mills resident was called by a bhenchod who posed as a member of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration to falsely claim that their Social Security number was tied to an investigation at the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas. The victim in this case was asked to transfer $46,000 from their bank account to a “safe government account.”
- After an extensive investigation and several search warrants, police issued a warrant for Fu’s arrest in June 2023, despite Fu fleeing to the People’s Republic of China in May.
- Fu was arrested as she tried to re-enter the United States of America and is now being held on a $100,000 bail on charges of larceny over $1,200 and receiving stolen property of over $1,200.
