On October 7, 2025, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia arrested 33-year old Bronx, NY resident Yordanys Rodriguez for facilitating a “grandparent” scam, where:
- Rodriguez would call his victims, in this case an 82-year-old male, under the guise of “Harvey Goldman,” an attorney representing the victim’s son in a criminal case.
- Rodriguez also facilitated the call with assistance from a co-conspirator, who would pose as the “son” and cry in the background.
- The victim was asked to withdraw over $20,000 from their bank account and hand it off to Rodriguez, who would then pose as a New York City police sergeant, complete with a fake badge and credentials.
Rodriguez was arrested on charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and conspiracy to commit a felony.
