On June 30, 2025, a grand jury in Hillsborough County, California INDICTED 38-year-old Rosemead, California resident Yalei “Peter” Li for serving as a money mule for an Apple technical support scam operation, where
- The scammers, from India, will make a series of deceptive phone calls to their victim, in this case a 92-year-old female, under the guise of an Apple technical support representative to falsely claim their computer was hacked and that their bank account was compromised.
- Another scammer will pose as a representative of the victims’ bank and instruct them to withdraw $50,000 and “safeguard” the money by handing it off to a designated courier, or money mule, who would also pose as a bank agent.
Li was arrested on April 8, 2025 and charged with attempted theft by deception. He faces a maximum of 7.5-15 years in state prison and a fine of $4,000, and is scheduled to appear in court July 7.
