Virtual vs Real Machine

Much has been said about configuring a virtual machine. Is there any difference if one chooses to dedicate an old, retired Windows PC entirely for scambaiting? What functionality is lost vs a VM?

@jaymee#147146 There are a couple of key points I’d like to make here.

First, using an old PC connected directly to your network opens up the potential for network exploits. It is unlikely, but everything must be considered as these people are criminals.

Secondly, the ease of resetting your computer after a scammer connects to it. Virtual Machines allow you to restore to a save point with a single click, instead of having to manually remove programs and searches from your scambait.

All-in-all I'd definitely recommend a VM, VirtualBox is free and relatively easy to use, and would save you time and the potential negative implications of letting a scammer access a bare metal machine.
