The One Ring Scam

My grandmother brought this up yesterday and I’ve just now discovered a news story on it. I suppose the scammers can somehow have 900 number/toll charges added onto your bill after you call them back. They’ll let your phone ring for one or two times or repeat calling until someone calls them back. I’m not tech savvy enough to know how that actually works.

To those reading that haven’t added it up already,

I wouldn’t recommend calling this number.

I don’t know of any real documentation of this scam. The FCC says it is real, but there are no details. Does the number appear as a standard 10 digits or something else? Does it have an associated country code on the front? How do the carriers even allow this to happen? How does the scammer profit? The money would only be paid to the carrier. Some sort of revenge tactic?
