On February 4, 2025, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a nearly $4,500,000 fine against Telnyx for allowing illegal robocalls to be made over their network, specifically ones falsely claiming to have been made by the Freakin’ FCC themselves!
How these scam calls worked was:
- The scammers would make fraudulent robocalls with a pre-recorded voice message that reads “Hello [RECIPIENT], you are receiving an automated call from the Federal Communications Commission notifying you the Fraud Prevention Team would like to speak with you. If you are available to speak now, please press 1. If you prefer to schedule a callback, please press 2.”
- The scammers would fraudulently pose as FBI agents to falsely claim their victims were accused of “crimes against the state.”
- The victims will then be asked to pay $1,000 in Google Play gift cards on the grounds of avoiding possible “jail time.”
The fine was made on the grounds that Telnyx failed to verify the identity of their customer who made the scam calls.
