I had a pop-up complete with an audible alarm, error code #, and “IP Address used without consent” message. It said I had to call the number (1-888-513-5597) to fix it and not to turn the computer off. They took over my computer and supposedly fixed the supposed problems, and told me I had no choice but to buy a security system to prevent further problems. They said they were connected with Webroot and Windows Defender. After giving them my credit card# and $400 US I received a follow-up call from Techs Secure Net. After realizing it was a scam I did some follow-up and talked to a couple employees of theirs. One told me that they are told to deny any involvement with pop-ups, which indicates this is something that probably only their higher management knows about. The employees are basically following a script and try to evade the issue and confuse you with nonsense about the different kinds of pop-ups and why they couldn’t have done it. They are obviously using a shady company in India to do their dirty work. I did get a refund from them after bringing up the subject of reporting them to the RCMP Fraud Unit (Canada). Another number I got a call from was 888-448-0182.
