Toll free numbers are easy to take down and are predictable. When they stop answering and going to voice mail, they have less than an hour. Also, the providers frequently are targeted by some US based scammer confidant who sets up the number and then turns it over to the overseas scammers. In this case the toll provider was a large well known provider.

@MQ9#82699 Actually most toll frees are forwards. You never get copper wire or a T1 with an 8YY DID.

There's always a non toll free that is taking the forwards from the toll number.

The carrier that has the toll free space basically charges rent for the number. In most cases the carrier is also supplying the non toll free DID as well in a bundled unit.

Scammers want to be toll free so badly because that gains legitimacy points and more inbounds but at the same time as you said it's way easier to knock a toll free number out of the ballpark.

Well said. Always appreciate your technical input. Oddly enough some victims seem to think the toll free numbers are untraceable and others are dumb enough to use *69 from their home phones. Had a colleague who was told he could “do nothing” by a scammer. Being prepared (and well connected - no pun) as usual, he took the scammer down in mid sentence. Another fellow got a personal call from a provider after he assisted with some sixty plus shutdowns in record time. He’s still going strong.
