On March 25, 2025, the Naples Police Department in Florida arrested 25-year-old Plainfield, Connecticut resident Soyeb Rana for serving as a money mule for a police impersonation scam where:
- The scammers will call their victims, in this case a 72-year-old couple, and falsely claimed a warrant was issued for their arrest.
- In order to avoid being taken into custody, the victims will be asked to withdraw money from their bank accounts and convert them into gold.
- The gold would then be picked up by a money mule, and additional payments will be demanded at later times.
Rana is now being held at the Collier County Jail on charges of
- Conspiracy
- Scheme to defraud
- Fleeing and eluding police
- Possession of marijuana.
