Started off as your typical SSA scam. Took a twist when they somehow were able to determine that the BS SSN I gave them was not, in fact, a valid SSN. They asked me to confirm several times and when I confirmed it they doubled down on that it was an invalid number. They also asked for my DOB so maybe they were able to cross reference the DOB to determine that the SSN wasn’t issued at that time but no idea what else they were doing behind the scenes.
Following up to my OP, it looks like they might be using a web tool like
https://www.ssn-check.org/verify/
To verify the approximate date of issue, state of issue, and whether the number is valid or not.
Le sigh, I'll have to put in just a bit more effort in trolling scammers
That’s just due diligence on their part.
Once you give a fake SSN (passes validator), just be firm, ultimatley most scammers give in.
