On October 15, 2025, the Kewanee Police Department in Illinois, with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois Police and Henry County SWAT, arrested 23-year-old Carol Stream, Illinois resident Shrey Patel for his role as a money mule for a Social Security scam, where:
- The scammers will call their victims, in this case an elderly woman, under the false personation of agents with the United States Department of the Treasury.
- The “agents” will threaten to arrest their victims for criminal charges stemming from their financial accounts being compromised, unless they withdraw money and handed them off to a designated courier, or money mule.
Patel is currently being held at the Henry County Jail on a charge of felony theft by deception.
