Sharing a tip to waste EXTRA time

I got an idea this morning how I can make my calls take extra much time for the scammers. My daughters have a friend visiting right now and since they don’t see her too often, that is always loaded with quite a bit of excitement… and the meaning of the word ‘quiet’ is ALWAYS forgotten within minutes. So I thought I’d used that for a few hours:

During a call - a sign to them will clear them to start making noise in the background... shouting... laughing... speaking to me... dropping things... etc, etc. Obviously I will be interrupted since I can't hear what the scammer says or I have to go and look what they're doing.

I can (without even have tried yet) , from earlier experiences from her visits, say that a 60-minute call easily can be stretched into 90 minutes... and that without having to act stupid (which might get transparent if you're not the actor for it).

Try this you too. Involve your children in something that's valuable and let them have some fun at the same time. ;o)

Some ideas I use to get calls to take up alot of time when pretending to be elderly are stating multiple times you suffer from short term memory loss to have them repeat them selves, bathroom breaks, needing water, taking pm medications that cause drowsiness, neighbor knocking on door, wallet/ check book is in the car and you need both hands to walk down the stairs (hence leaving phone at the computer) and other real life excuses.

Also waste their times like:

Someone is knocking on the door. Need to attend

Need to go to the bathroom

Kettle for my tea is boiling

Postman wants my signature

Sorry I did not hear you

Cat is scratching my leg, need to take her out the door

Cat is hungry

Ideas like those are also on the list, believe me. But I thought this one, with the children could be something extra. since it can be combined with everything else that you do during the call… and it worked like a charm. I “launched” them from start to end of the calls I did, without raising a grain of suspicion. “I have children myself”, “They have so much energy in their early years”… one even told me to go and see what’s happened when they flipped a big box over". It actually felt as if this distracted the scammers from everything else I did to add time.

Win-win-win...
1:Waste extra time and hide my "agenda" better (obviously)
2: Teach the children something valuable.
3: Getting to annoy the wife by doing something JUSTIFIED. :P

@drwat#100491 heed the words of the Doc…a prodigious time water…he even wastes my time!

@MrSweck#100416 I use these tricks all the time. I also pretend to be very hard of hearing or not understand their accents. (The latter of which I often really don’t understand. A scammer once told me to type “fee” and “tra” in a URL. Are they supposed to be numbers or letters?)

If it requires writing something down, I pretend to mess up (sometimes their instructions are so poor anyway I don't need to pretend.) Or run into technical problems such as Error 404, No Internet Connections, Crashes, lag and ask for patience and sometimes help as I restart the browser, computer, router, and modem repeatedly often taking an agonizing amount of time. Sometimes I will pretend to be completely computer illiterate and have trouble turning the thing on, clicking on things, not understanding the browser and address bar and etc... If I make them wait a long time while nothing works and force them to constantly repeat they get irritated extremely easily during a prolonged period.

@MrSweck#100416 I once got a scammer for my Grandmother who just turned 101. The scammer claimed to be Apple support calling for her MacBook which has viruses detected.

I was with said Grandmother atvthe time who was quite noisy so I kept getting distracted on purpose and made him repeatedly start over. When she took a nap, I tried to pay attention and I told her true sad and amazing story between lag and technical errors and when he heard that and still decided to scam her I decided he deserved everything and wasted his time for over 3 hours including the time my parents came home and I handed the phone over to them and didn't pay attention to him at all while keeping him on the phone doing chores.

They hung up on him and he called back because he thought he really reeled me in.
