Scammers Hang Up On Me

Lately, I’ve had this issue where I call scammers, and they get suspicious almost immediately and hang up. I’m not sure if it’s my voice or something I’m saying, but a lot of them seem highly paranoid, and I must be tipping them off somehow.

Typically, I’ll say something like, “I’m having a problem with my Coinbase account.” They ask for my name, then my phone number, and then they just hang up. Other times, they’ll ask me to describe my issue, and I try to make it sound like a real problem someone would have, but they still hang up. Does anyone else experience this?

I remember reading that some scammers only target people they think are old, and I wonder if my voice makes them think I’m too young and smart to fall for it—so why would I even be calling? Just wanted to share my frustration. Occasionally, I do get someone on the phone, but it seems like 90% of the numbers are dead, and the 10% that pick up are too paranoid to talk.

I have the same problem with my relatives.
Are you using a spoofed number or a text now number?
I have that issue when I’m using text now, it seems

It maybe helpful to sound ignorant & desperate in place of old. “I’m not good with this tech stuff” or “really hope you can help me figure this out”. I see on YouTube they also open with dropping hints of being scammed previously “the last time I paid Microsoft they were able to help” kind of thing. No idea how this fits your situation.

If you are repeatedly calling from the same number, that’s going to be a dead give-away - even if they don’t block it. Lately I’ve changed just the last 4 digits when spoofing numbers, & they’re starting to call that out - “Last time you called from 1234, why are you now calling from 4321?”. I imagine that they are going to share notes to try to save time & ignore the noise. Make the first call a good one, & then try to be as unique as possible on the next call(s).

Yeah I just lean into my ADHD and bad hearing tendencies that I learned to work around and just don’t catch myself when I do it. I just go with my typical hard of hearing and confused self. I also say things like “I’m not good with this tech stuff” and have them repeat stuff. You find a style. Everyone does. If not, just harass them nonstop. I’ve been calling the Coinbase guys for two hours straight. If you were calling them now, don’t feel bad. I’ve been calling them nonstop for hours and wearing them out. You should too! I also use like 5-6 different burner apps if you are trying to switch around numbers all of the time. Some people have better tech than that too
