Scammed my Grandfather for $2499

I’m posting this to raise awareness and seek guidance regarding a recent scam incident involving my 72-year-old grandfather, who runs a small poultry farm and uses QuickBooks to manage his finances.

Last week, his QuickBooks software crashed, and in an attempt to get support, he searched for a customer service number on Google. Unfortunately, the number he found +1-888-918-0712, led him to a fraudulent support service operating under the name ProAdvisor Professionals (website: https://proadvisorprofessionals.com, email: [email protected]).

A representative from this “support team” took remote control of his computer and convinced him to pay $2499 for a so-called 3-year QuickBooks support plan via Heartland Payments. Despite several remote sessions over the past week, the original issue remains unresolved, and it quickly became clear that this was a scam.

We’ve already disputed the charge with Chase Bank and are currently awaiting the outcome of that process. I also called the number myself and spoke to a man who identified himself as “Richard Thomas” a classic fake name. While he maintained a polite tone, it was clear he was stalling and deflecting. He was miles better than the regular Indian scam calls we get regularly.

I wanted to post this both as a warning to others and to ask if there are any further steps we can take—whether to report this to federal authorities, QuickBooks/Intuit, or any cybersecurity watchdogs.

If anyone here has experience with similar scams or knows how best to escalate this matter, I’d greatly appreciate your input.

Please let me know if any additional information would help.
