Indian scammers scamming Indians, scam from villages even

Shout out to Sven for being involved in this and everyone else involved indeed.

and @anon70175667

Thanks so much!! You’re so kind. Sven definitely did an awesome job and represented us all so well!

It is still mind boggling that people get scammed because nothing in their crude script makes sense. It is not just an age thing. My dad is in his early 80s, uses a computer & smart phone, and never got scammed. My mom is not tech savvy but she never got scammed either.

Consider:

  • “John Wilson” has a thick Indian accent and speaks poor English. Really?
  • An IRS agent knows nothing about US taxes.
  • Microsoft calls you from “Redmond, Washington, D.C.”
  • Emails from Amazon are sent from a gmail email address.
  • People have rented a car under your Social Security Number. When did you ever provide your SSN to rent a car??
  • Someone needs to connect to your computer for you to fill out a refund form. Really? Have you ever encountered this situation in real life? No. In real life the agent you talk to will always enter the required information in his/her system. How can people fall for this? Nothing to do with not being computer savvy or older. It’s just an implausible scenario.
  • In the background you can hear another “agent” repeating to someone else what you just heard word for word a minute ago.
  • The agent insists to put the refund directly in your bank account instead of on your credit card as normally done.
  • The IRS wants you to pay them with gift card. Now stop a minute and think about that.
  • The agent on the phone insists that you must not tell your bank why you are withdrawing all this money. How often has this happened in real life?
  • You purchased an iPhone on Amazon or you made a transaction on PayPal. Yet when you login to your account online there is no such transaction.

Nothing makes sense. Nothing.
If these are not enough to raise some kind of tiny read flag then I don’t know what to say…
All that is needed is plain old common sense.
