On May 7, 2026, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, arrested 20-year-old Samya Sharnae Kelly for serving as a money mule for a prisoner-led “jury duty” scam operation, where
- Georgia state prison inmates will call their victims under the false personation of law enforcement officers.

- The phones used are considered contraband.
- In order to avoid being “arrested” for supposedly missing jury duty, the victims were asked to pay $750 through PayPal or Apple Pay
Kelly has since been charged with obtaining money via false pretenses and two counts of money laundering.
