This past weekend, the Greater/Grand Sudsbury Police Service in Ontario, Canada arrested 26-year-old Sagar Sharma and 42-year-old Benjamin Alexander for facilitating a “grandparent” scam against an older female from Coniston. How their scam worked was:
- One of the scammers would call the victim and falsely claim their grandson was arrested for causing a multi-vehicle accident and needed a substantial amount of money to be bailed out.
- Another scammer, later on, would call the victim under the guise of the grandson’s lawyer to demand an additional lump sum of money to cover legal fees.
- Each of these “fees” were required to be handed over to designated money mules.
Sharma was arrested on Friday, March 14, 2025 and charged with
- Two counts of fraud over $5,000
- Two counts of personation with intent.
Alexander was arrested on Sunday, March 16, 2025 and charged with:

- Fraud over $5,000
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Trafficking in property obtained by crime.
