On May 16, 2024, the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) raided a call center in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia that facilitated a romance scam operation since this past April. American citizens were targeted and directed to gamble and lose all of their money on a fake gambling platform.
- 12 individuals between the ages of 18 and 43, including at least 1 female, were arrested under sections 420 (Cheating and Dishonesty) and 511 (Attempted Cheating and Dishonesty of the Malaysian Penal Code, and may be sentenced to prison or GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY if convicted.
- Authorities have also seized 9 laptops, 33 mobile phones, 5 rings, 6 sling bags, 2 luxury watches, a necklace and various denominations of foreign currencies.
