On September 30, 2024, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office in California arrested 39-year-old Qi Lin from San Francisco for serving as a money mule for a Microsoft technical support scam operation that involved the use of fake virus popups. The scammers would gain remote access to their victims computer and convince their victims to remove $32,000 from their bank accounts to prevent further “criminal activity.”
Lin is currently being held on a $500,000 bail at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on charges of:
- Grand Theft
- Obtaining Money by False Pretense
- Conspiracy to Commit Crime and Elder Theft.
