Not a scam scam? 844-231-4831

Weird one here… got a robocall on my landline saying that they were from the Visa/master card fraud department or something like that, and that there were 2 charges made against my credit card that they wanted to confirm. The charges were something like $400 on e-bay and something like $2900 to western union. If they were my charged, just press ‘1’ to confirm, otherwise, call 844-231-4831 to report the fraudulent activity.

So I call the number, and she asked if I was on the number I received the call on. I was using a bogus CID on FireRTC, so it wasn't the number they called, but I said it was anyway. She put me on hold for a moment and then got back on and repeated those two charges that were specified in the robocall. Then she asked if I had made them, and I said I hadn't and that she needed to decline them. She said she would, thanked me, and hung up. Huh? Something is missing here and I'm pretty sure it was the SCAM part! Maybe someone else can give it a whirl and see what they come up with.

Oh - Phone number is: 844-231-4831

@Otis#145856 didn’t get any response. Just hung up

@Otis#145856 That sounds like the same old scam. It does not make sense to hang up. But they never make sense!

The number is still active. She sounds like she is doing this all on her own. No background noise at all.$499 on ebay and $3500 on Western Union. I asked which card. She said my Visa. I said which Visa because I have two. She said Chase. I said I do not have a Chase Visa. Click. For sure a scam.

I called and the women who picked up called me stupid and basically laughed at me.

@JusticeinTexas#145879 Got a little further on this one. I gave her another number, still fake, that I received the message on - different from the one I was calling her on. She asked for my name, date of birth, and maybe something else, I don’t remember, but then said she would check on my account.

Sure enough, $399 on e-bay, $3,999 with western union.

Then she started probing for info. Like had I given my card to anyone to use and when was the last time I used it. For last use, I told her Amazon a few days ago. Then she asked locally, and I said I wasn't sure but it was probably to get gas about a month ago. She said "You haven't left your house in month?". I said sure I had, went to Michaels today to get some casting resin (they have 50% off until Sunday!) and paid cash - don't like paying on credit. Then she asked me to check my wallet to make sure it wasn't missing. I pretended to get my wallet and then asked her what card. She said my debit card. I told her I didn't have a debit card, but I did have my mastercard. She said,"Yes, that is the one" ;)

Then she said that she had requested the charges to be canceled, and she just got back confirmation that the e-bay charge was canceled and the money would be refunded back to my card. Unfortunately, the western union charge went through already and can't be canceled... apparently the money was picked up by someone named Claire who said they were my daughter, was able to provide the CC number used, and showed a drivers license and passport ID. I believe she originally said the money was sent to Poland, so that must be where all of this is happening! Of course I told her I didn't have a daughter named Claire, and what could I do. She asked if I had online banking, and I said I didn't - and that I guess all I can do is dispute the charges with my bank. She got kind of upset at that and snipped "Yes, you do that" and hung up.

I THINK she was trying to get me online with my bank - at least that seemed to be where she was headed. I'll wait a little bit and call in as someone else and continue the investigation into this non-scam scam.

@theloneranger#145886 She should talk?

@Otis#145894 That sounds like the scam. Get into your bank account and refund you the money. Like you would not call the number on the back of your credit card to find out about this. They know absolutely nothing about how things work. Try saying, “How did that happen? I have a credit limit of $500! How did YOU let this go through? I am VERY UPSET WITH YOU!” They usually do not know what a credit limit is.

@JusticeinTexas#145899 I guess I’m the stupid one but then again, she’s the thief here, not me. That women wasn’t very nice. I guess she’s getting annoyed by the amount of calls she’s recieving.

@JusticeinTexas#145902 Icing on the cake.

Granny called and the femscammer was way nasty this time. Guess she has been getting hammered on all day and showing the stress. She wouldn't cooperate at all, said she wouldn't help granny and hung up. So Granny called back and asked why she hung up and was so rude. Femscammer replied "I don't like your voice - you sound like a pig... squeek, squeek, pig talk". That got Granny pretty riled up, so she retaliated in true Granny style "Oh my young lady, you are very rude and being very ugly. You should have your mouth washed out with soap! If you were my daughter, I'd bend you over my knee and give you a good whats for!".

This went back and forth for a bit until she finally had enough and hung up. It was fun, but not quite the ending I was hoping for.

So I waited 10-15 minutes, and then...

One of Grannys grandsons called! Got the femscammer and started laying into her "Young lady, what did you say to my Grandmother that made her so upset? She is about the easiest going person I have ever met and you had her boiling mad. So mad that we believe she had a heart attack and she just left for the hospital in an Ambulance. What on earth do you say to her... is there a supervisor there that I can speak with. She played dumb like she had no idea what I was talking about.

"Granny received a call about some charges on her credit card, and called you about them. I don't know what you said to her, but she was upset like nothing I have ever seen. Said something about a nasty young lady being so rude and insulting to her for no apparent reason. She was going on and on about ht when she fell over in the living room and hit her head on the coffee table. Now she is off to the hospital, and the police said that if she should die, then the young lady would be charged with homicide at least, possibly more".

Silence. I mean the kind of silence you make when you have just shit your pants ;) Then some fumbling and a man got on the phone with pretty good English wanting to know what was going on - apparently he was a supervisor in charge. I went through the whole story, maybe added a few extra juicy bits, and said that we were trying to find out who the young lady was and what she said to make Granny so upset. He said he would cooperate fully because "we are a legitimate banking institution and will do anything we can to assist local authorities in any such matter"!!! He asked for the phone number she called in on, and said that there was no record, but he would file a complaint and report to the corporate office for them to start their own internal review. I thanked him and said that the police were investigating, are trying to find the young lady Granny spoke with, and that because it involved banking matters, that the FBI would probably be called in as well. He should be expecting a call from them some time soon so they can get more information about the case.

He said he would cooperate freely, apologized profusely, and said he wished Granny a speedy recovery, then hung up.

@Otis#145921 Wow, what a liar. Not you! Him! DId you ask the name of the banking institution?

>

@JusticeinTexas#145931 DId you ask the name of the banking institution?

No... but when she answers the phone, she says its the "Visa/Mastercard Fraud Protection Department" or something like that. I'm sure they would just say they ARE Visa/Mastercard.

@Otis#145934 It would actually be your bank that called you about fraud. I have had it happen. And then I say I will call you back on the number on my card just to make sure it is for real. Had it happen with AT&T fraudsters, too. I called back on their main number and of course it was all a fake trying to get my password to get into my Wifi. These people! I just talked to a guy for 45 minutes about why he is a scammer. He just kept lying about being in Texas. He finally admitted to me that he was 19 and he HAD to do it he HAD no choice. I have heard that so many times my ears bleed. Everybody has a choice. I told him my life story and said you know what, son, I never stole anything from anybody even when I went hungry. He has this idea that every body in the USA is rich and can afford to have their money taken. I asked him where he got that from and he said TV and movies. I sometimes think I see a glimmer of hope but I have come to realize that there is none. In 11 years dealing with these people not one had actually told me the truth. I have given out a number they can text me and they pretend they are so nice and want help and then turn around and try to steal from me thinking I have a soft heart. This guy just kept lying and lying and I kept at him until he actually cried. My husband says that I am relentless. Well, being a cop for 11 years taught me how to interrogate someone and break them down. I can only hope that he heard at least one thing I said to him. So young and so lost already.
