Hello all, I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for being here.
I recently fell for a scam where I thought I was talking to the bank. The person on the call sounded American and had enough info on me that I thought it was legit. The number they used was also my banks number.
I was able to resolve it with the real bank, but I was left feeling embarrassed and ashamed. I ended up on youtube, then jim’s discord, and finally here.
Seeing such a community devoting time to expertise to diverting scammers and helping those that are being scamed is uplifting and I look forward to learning and finding my place here.
Be on the lookout for “spoofed” numbers/email addresses.
It’s where it makes it look like everything is legit and it’s coming straight from the actual business but it’s not.
Yes, there’s tech for that.
Yeah, people can spoof phone numbers and there’s no industry standard method to verify the caller is the real one. Email has DKIM, though, which is good
Don’t trust based on accent or what info someone has. If they have stuff like parts of your credit card or full name or something, make sure to check intelx.io and haveibeenpwned.com.
And just so you know, there’s a good amount of independent scammers in America, but not many people selling services to scammers, like there are in India, which is why it’s easy to start scamming there.
I have talked to legitimate Indian tech support agents, because real companies do outsource tech support to India. It’s sad that scammers ruin the reputation of a great country.
Welcome! Thanks for going out of your way to educate yourself and join the community! This is a huge step in scam prevention, and we seriously need more people like you! Thankfully your bank sorted it out!
Sure.
We received a text from “USPS” saying that we missed the delivery of a package with a link to a fake website requesting a small fee to have the package redelivered. We used our debit card to pay the fee. Later that night we received a call from our bank’s fraud team stating that the early charge to USPS was fraudulent and that someone was attempting to use our card.
The caller from the bank was scamming us. The phone number they were calling from was spoofed to reflect the real banks phone number and the had the information from the earlier USPS transaction to feed back to me so as to seem legit. The caller seemed American and was friendly, and helpful.
He then had me verify the rest of the account info and then told me he was sending me a security check to my phone to ensure that everything was working correctly. I was instructed to accept the message and I stupidly did. My account was then locked out. Everything was transferred into one account and then that account was emptied into apple play cards.
Wow… that’s a sophisticated and horrible scam. If you have a recording of the call or something, you could file a police report. If he’s American, then there might be a good investigation, because the US has good resources.
