Hi. I found this site because an elder family friend has been scammed out of life savings via palpal scam. LE is involved but aren’t doing much. I have phone numbers and logs from the remote control sw and am trying to get the IP address. I can try to bait myself but am fearful I may mess up since it would be my first time. Would anyone be willing to try to bait these guys via these numbers to locate IP address? I don’t want to post the numbers publicly for fear they could be reading this site and it may tip them off.
Unfortunately, I’m not such an experienced scambaiter but you can ask one of the regulars or leaders for help.
The problem you will have is that even knowing the IP address will only help locate the service provider and perhaps their location, but will do little in helping to get your friend’s money back as there is little LE assistance in India where most of these scams originate. Their phone numbers change constantly, so even knowing the phone number at the time is of little use. I think your best bet is to contact the fraud department at Paypal and see what they might be able to do. This is a terrible problem. I run classes and write a newsletter on scams I suspect may be the only long-term solution. In the meantime, we do whatever we can to waster their time, shut down their ISPs and phone numbers, but it’s a Sisyphean task. I’ve almost finished with an instructional video that I will make available for anyone who wants it that details how the scams work and what to look for. I just watched your PayPal video and got quite a bit of laughs. That initial script is exactly what happened and they downloaded Team Viewer and Anydesk and had access to camera and PC 24/hrs. and harrassed for weeks. We understand the money is probably gone but want the IP to determine where they are located.
