New Scammer Tactic

Today I got a call come in, the second I heard the VICIdial pop noise, I knew it was a scam. I entertained the scam simply to see if anything would come out of it.

The person I was speaking with told me they worked on behalf of MasterCard and said that there was lots of detected fraudulent transactions on my statement, then told me to look at the back of the card.

At this point I was expecting him to ask me to read out my card number or something similar, but instead he asked me to press the hash key & type in the phone number on the back of my card.

I did so and was then introduced to some very fake sounding generic hold music and then the exact same person I was just speaking with using a terrible voice changer, where he then asked me to read out the numbers on my card.

I refused and told him I thought this was a scam. He then brought up the fact that I was the one who typed the bank’s phone number in on my keypad so “how would it be a scam”

I just thought this was quite interesting since they’re now gaslighting victims into thinking they’re speaking to an individual at their bank and the cold call was simply more of a “notification” call in a sense.

Not sure if this has been done before, but I hadn’t seen it and thought it was interesting :+1:

I’ve never heard of one quite like that. I’ve gotten plenty of credit card scam calls, but I’ve never heard of one with the punching in the phone number element. Sounds like you could have some fun with them.
I do see how an elderly or confused person might fall for it.

Huh ironically I just watched a video on this a yesterday. It’s mainly used for landlines unless the guy didn’t have you hang up. The delayed hang up method. I’ll link the video. It’s https://youtu.be/n6sViBC9DGo
