Why in the hell do they do this? Did somebody tell them that this provides some sort of false legitimacy to their ruse? I always crack up when they answer “Social Security Administration. This is officer David Williams and my badge number is 714654.”

Yeah it is weird. Dead giveaway that its a scam. Just awful. The other oddity is their insistence that you write down all of that phony information.
I was thinking of telling the next one that I too have a badge number and he/she should "grab a piece of paper and pen handy!"
