On October 12, 2024, police in Mumbai, India conducted a raid against an illegal call center on Chincholi Bunder Road, West Malad for facilitating investment scams under the guise of a British trading firm by the name of “VFX Markets.” Their victims were cold-called and promised high returns in forex markets.
14 individuals, including their 35-year-old kingpin Amar Rovara, were arrested and produced in the section court under
- Sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), 316(5) (criminal breach of trust after being entrusted with property), 318(4) (cheating and dishonesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
- 25(c) (inten tionally damaging or tampering with telegraphs) of the Indian Telegraph Act
- Section 66(c) (identity theft), 66(d) (cheating by personation using a computer resource) of the Information Technology Act
- Section 3 (fraudulent default by financial establishment) of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Institutions Act of 1999.
Police have also seized two laptops, 16 desktops, two mobile phones and other related documents.
