On April 4, 2025, police in Mumbai, India raided an illegal call center operating out of the Mittal Industrial Estate in Marol, East Andheri for deceiving Canadian nationals with an Amazon refund scam, where:
- The scammers made unsolicited robocalls under the guise of Amazon, urging victims to press 1 if they didn’t recently purchase an iPhone 16 Pro Max.
- The scammers who answer the call will forward the call to a co-worker posing as a Canadian Crown Attorney, who persecutes cases on behalf of the government.
- In order to resolve the dispute, the victim will be asked to purchase a $100 gift card, with the funds being sent to their kingpin, Shailesh Dombaria from Bombivli.
Dombaria is still at large alongside Sunita Pandey, but police were able to arrest the following individuals under certain provisions of the IT Act and Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the BNS:
- Azhar Kadari, a 40-year-old manager of the call center.
- Akash Kale, a 30-year-old employee.
- Mohammad Shahnawaz Rais Shaikh, a 29-year-old employee.
- Gopalsingh Deepal, a 25-year-old employee.
- Mustaffa Chitalwala, a 31-year-old employee.
