Mohammad Gazi ARRESTED for facilitating McAfee refund scam

On May 8, 2025, the Waterford Township Police Department in Michigan arrested 49-year-old Warren resident Mohammad Gazi for stealing $42,000 through a McAfee refund scam, where:

  • The victim, in this case an elderly woman from Waterford Township, received a call from Gazi, who fraudulently posed as a representative from McAfee to falsely claim they deposited $20,000 to her bank account.
  • The victim will be asked to withdraw $20,000 from her bank account and hand it off to a designated courier, or money mule.
  • Once the money is sent, Gazi will request an additional $18,000 and, later, $43,000.

Gazi is now being held on a $500,000 bail on charges of

  • Making false pretenses
  • Using a computer to commit a crime (2ct)
  • Attempted false pretenses
  • Attempting to use a computer to commit a crime (2ct)

Police have also seized cash, computers and cell phones from Gazi’s home, as he is believed to be connected to similar scams targeting elderly victims in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.,

But, but, but…
They only scam because they live in a country with a lot of poverty and no opportunities…
Oh wait

Another favorite excuse of bleeding-heart liberal crowd is that “he had a difficult childhood”, “didn’t have much family and lacked friends and good role models”. Kind of along these lines

I had a close friend once told me this almost verbatim. I asked him “if they’re lying about calling from said company, what makes the second lie a truth?” His jaw dropped. Imagine that… a liar is a repeat offender.

Hey buddy, lefties and righties bait on here. Save the generalizations.

Yeah, that’s fine. The most unfortunate issue we are facing as a society is a lack of accountability. If we had it, we wouldn’t even have to deal with these nasty scammers: VOIP carriers’ “leadership” would be arrested for turning a blind eye to scam calls, illegal call centers would be struck by drones & hypersonic missiles and money mules would be placed in some beautiful far-far-away labor camps. Sadly, it’s not happening in the modern plutocracy.

Exactly, and we’ve had just over 3 presidential terms with republicans and 3 with dems since phone scams became this much of an issue and neither party has done much of anything about it.

I agree. The whole system is a hot mess that’s sinking further and further daily. The EU is a total shitshow, too (although they are doing a tad better with curbing illegal robocalls and putting pressure on their carriers). Need new leaders with real critical thinking.

It’s even simpler. Just functioning and evolving regulations and oversight. Sanctions on India and Pakistan, though no one wants to do that since they ally against China

I’ve been saying this for a while now.

You are 100% correct. For most part, the issue would go away if we were to: 1. Sanction and pressure India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Nigeria 2. Hold VOIP carriers accountable for turning a blind eye to illegal robocalls 3. Require In-Person registration with the carrier for all persons purchasing VOIP or any other phone numbers. Germany requires it as part of their National KYC Process, and their scam calls are practically non-existent.

On the positive note, look at what some great folks from this forum accomplished! I am very pleased that they are bringing awareness to this issue. Scam Hunters Observe Rising Use of T-Mobile US Prepaid SIMs by Criminals | Commsrisk
