On June 25, 2024, Mohali Police conducted a raid against Webtap Private Limited, an illegal call center operating out of the first floor of the Kailash Tower at F 177, Phase, 8B, Industrial Area, Sector 74, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Punjab 140308, India for duping US residents with PayPal refund scams.
- The scammers sent fraudulent emails falsely claiming illegal transactions were made on their PayPal account, urging them to call a “customer care” number and have the agents instruct them to purchase a $100-1,000 gift card.
- 37 were arrested, 25 men and 12 women. This includes the kingpins Kaivin Patel and Parteek Dudhat, who are natives of Gujarat.
- 45 laptops were seized during the operation alongside headsets, 59 mobile handsets (23 business, 36 personal) and a black Mercedes-Benz.
- The scammers are charged with breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy under sections 406, 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code.
