A Discord user informed me of this scam. Someone posing as support for the Mercari app. A third party market place for people to sell things. Kind of like eBay or Facebook marketplace. This user posted a listing and shortly after was contacted from someone claiming to be interested in the item. They told this individual that they needed to have “instant pay activated” and in order to do so they needed to contact an email [email protected] . After contacting the email, this user was greeted with a message instructing them to get a $200 gift card. After which the user explained that they didn’t have that much, the scammer pitched a lower amount. Asking for $150 (which is the email below). After paying the $100 they were then instructed to get another $400 worth of gift cards for a “25% return” on the investment.
These scammers are using a Google hosted email domain. And a Text Now number to communicate with the victims.
