On May 18, 2025, the Littleton Police Department in Colorado arrested Meet Hittendrakumar Soni, an Indian national currently residing in New Jersey on a student visa, for stealing $130,000 from an elderly female through a Social Security scam, where
- The scammers will send fraudulent text messages from spoofed Verizon numbers falsely claiming they were charged for something they never ordered.
- Once the victim calls their designated “suppoat” line, the scammers will then transfer the call to coworkers posing as the United States Federal Trade Commission and falsely claiming their financial information was hacked.
- The victims will be asked to “secure” their money by purchasing $10,000 in Bitcoin and over $450,000 in gold bars, which would be handed off to designated couriers or money mules.
Soni has admitted to have flown from New Jersey to three other states, including Colorado, to pick up similar packages as part of a “widespread criminal network.” He has since been booked into the Arapahoe County Jail.
