On March 13, 2025, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama arrested 28-year-old Stone Mountain, Georgia resident Marcus Cortez Brashear for facilitating a “jury duty” scam where
- The scammer will call their victims by spoofing the number used by Marshall County Sheriffs to falsely claim their victim failed to appear in federal court.
- To avoid being “arrested,” the victim would be asked to pay $5,000 to him through Zelle, PayPal or Apple Pay.
Brashar is currently held in the Marshall County Jail on a $50,000 property bond and a $5,000 cash bond. He has been charged with 1st-degree theft of property by deception and impersonating a peace officer.
