On June 27, 2025, police in Kolkata, West Bengal, India raided an illegal call center operating out of a first floor apartment for facilitating a myriad of refund scams impersonating PayPal, Norton and McAfee. The scammers arrested are:
- Asutosh Ray, the 28-year-old kingpin
- Mc Sarfaraz, a 22-year-old from Bright St., Karaya
- Akeel Ahmed, a 22-year-old from Bright St., Karaya
- Nawazish Hussain, a 23-year-old from Bright St., Karaya
- Md Rashed Hussain, a 22-year-old from Bright St., Karaya
The scammers were arrested under sections 66, 66C, 66D, 84B and 43 of the Information Technology Act and sections 61(2), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 318(4) (cheating), 336(2-3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security) and 340(2) (using forged documents) of the BNS.
Police have also seized 4 laptops, 5 cell phones, two routers and incriminating documents, including their scripts and leads.
