On August 1, 2024, Kolkata Police conducted a raid against an illegal call center on Raja Rammohan Roy Road in Behala for conducting a tech support scam operation targeting Australian nationals by making unsolicited cold calls under the guise of reputable Internet service providers and convincing them to pay a small “registration fee” to “repair” their Internet connections.
Seven individuals were arrested during the operation on charges of cheating, forgery, fraud and criminal conspiracy:
- Rishikanta Roy (31)
- Sukanta Kanji (21)
- Atmaprakash Das (30)
- Nandalal Verma (28)
- Vinit Mishra (32)
- Ronit Dutta (22)
- Ashish Gupta (34)
Several devices were also seized during the operation alongside the names and contact details of 7,000 victims.
