"Jury duty" scammers ARRESTED, also hit w/ drug, weapon charges

On February 28, 2025, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, in cooperation with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement arrested three Patterson, New Jersey residents for facilitating “jury duty” scams where:

  • The scammers use caller ID spoofing technology to contact their victims under the guise of bail bondsmen or law enforcement officials and threaten to arrest them for missing court proceedings or ignoring jury duty.
  • In order to avoid “incarceration,” the victim will be asked to meet with an “official” and hand over large sums of money to them.

When detectives executed search warrants at two Patterson, New Jersey residences associated with the scammers, detectives located:

  • Suspected fentanyl
  • Prescription legend drugs
  • Drug packaging materials
  • Stamps used for heroin packaging
  • Cutting agents
  • Empty glassine bags
  • Electronic scales
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Cash proceeds
  • An unregistered handgun loaded with illegal hollow-point ammunition.
  • A loaded, illegal assault rifle.

Three scammers were arrested and are currently being held in the Bergen County Jail pending their appearances in the Bergen County Superior Court:

YASEN R. DELGADO (26)

  • Maintaining a drug production facility
  • Theft by deception and extortion (multiple counts)
  • Possession with intent to distribute narcotics
  • Firearms offenses
  • Forgery
  • Impersonating law enforcement
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.

AHJAINAY N. GAWTHNEY (27)

  • Conspiracy to commit theft by extortion (9 counts)
  • Theft by deception
  • Money Laundering

DELAREESE DELGADO (31)

  • Possession of a prohibited firearm and large-capacity magazine.
