On September 19, 2025, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Ocala, Florida arrested 41-year-old Brooklyn, New York resident Jiang Jingcai for serving as a money mule for a technical support scam, where:
- The victim would receive a fake virus popup on their iPad, instructing them to call and verify that their device wasn’t compromised.
- Once called, the victim will be contacted by “Sydney,” who falsely claimed to be from the investigations division of their bank and instructed the victim to purchase $4,000 in gift cards and mail them to different addresses.
- Once the money is collected, “Sydney” will demand that the victim withdraw $15,000 in cash, place it in a box and hand the box over to a designated courier or money mule.
Jingcai is currently being held without bail at the Marion County Jail on charges of fraud and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.
