On March 18, 2025, 34-year-old St-Étienne-de-Beauharnois resident Jean-François Gagnon was convicted on 56 different counts of fraud for stealing nearly $200,000 from 55 elderly victims by
- calling their victims under the guise of a bank representative to falsely claim they detected fraudulent activity on their account.
- demand their victims to hand over their bank cards and PIN numbers in order to resolve their issue.
- have a designated money mule pick up the gift card from the victims’ residence, then use them to withdraw money from their victims’ bank accounts or make purchases.
Gagnon was arrested in December 2023 and pleaded guilty to his crimes in October 2024, landing him a sentence of 50 months in prison. A 28-year-old accomplice, Kevin Lelièvre, is due to appear in court this coming June.
