I live in a PG&E electric utility service area. Got an inbound call, warning that my electricity will be disconnected in half an hour. Call 800-871-4759 to make arrangements.
The call director mimics the utility's IVR. Pressed option to pay, and talked to Michael Burke, Ext 120. I have to pay $498.95 to their "corporate same day express payment system" because regular method won't work the technician that will disconnect my service has already been dispatched.
Talking to him now … Long pause no music … Kind of accent … Said got disconnection call …getting manager … Hold music now … See how long on hold totally shitty connection
Sam Ting Wong (thick Chinese accent) called back, but Michael Burke was in a conference call, and he instructed his secretary, Ms.Amy Green, ID # CA22460 on extension 121 to take the MoneyPak payment information from me. Since Sam Ting Wong is paranoid, he sensed that something’s wrong, and asked for Ms. Green’s location. She said 1425 Clay St., Oakland, CA. (PG&E Customer Service location) Hey, that’s just around the corner from Oakland Chinatown where I live, why don’t I just hand the card to you after work, then we can have coffee or something by the shore at Lake Merritt? “Why are you asking these questions, I will send the technician to disconnect your service and I will report you. Goodbye”.
The phone rings and rings now … I hit them Fuckin hard!!! HAHA take that you assholes … He said stop calling here please . I said nope … He was trying convince me they are PG$E … no they aren’t. I just spoke to them the real one
Number appears to be down now. Just a constant busy. Probably they folded up, or PG&E got to their carrier and shut them down.
If history is to repeat itself, they will easily obtain another 800 number and switch to another utility area. A few months ago the PG&E scam switched to Southern California Edison - same scam, different utility.
I've heard from Nextdoor members that they also received calls yesterday. So their "campaign" was targeted to our local area, and they even used a nearby PG&E customer service center as their pretend address.
