On September 11, 2025, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Franklin, Kentucky arrested 27-year-old Harshit Singh, an Indian national who entered the states on a Canadian work visa, for facilitating a Social Security scam where:
- The scammers will contact their victims, in this case an elderly man, under the guise of an officer with the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
- In order to prevent their bank accounts from being “frozen” due to an “active investigation,” the victim will be asked to withdraw $30,000 in cash and hand it off to a designated courier or money mule.
Singh was arrested after arriving to a victim’s house in a black BMW without a license plate and fleeing the scene once Sheriffs got close. Sheriffs have also uncovered an ID in his wallet for “private security and investigative services.”
Singh is currently being held on a $50,000 bond at the Franklin County Regional Jail on charges of
- Theft by deception
- Impersonating a peace officer
- Abuse/neglect of an adult
- Obscuring the identity of a machine
- First-degree evading police in a motor vehicle
- Disregarding a stop sign
- Failure to produce insurance card.
