On March 17, 2026, police in Hamilton Township, New Jersey arrested 20-year-old Queens, New York resident Gurpreet Singh for facilitating an FTC scam, where
- Singh would call his victims, in this case a 55-year-old from May Landing, under the false personation of an agent with the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC), threatening to arrest them.
- In order to avoid being “arrested,” the victim was asked to withdraw $70,000 from their bank account, purchase $6,000 worth of Lululemon gift cards and hand them off to a designated courier, or money mule.
- The money mule will pose as an undercover officer and present a fake badge to the victim when collecting the money.
- When the money is collected, the scammers will demand an additional $63,000 from the victim.
Singh is currently being held at the Atlantic County Justice facility on charges of
- 2nd-degree theft and the conspiracy to commit
- 2nd-degree theft by deceptiuon
- 2nd-degree theft by extortion
- 4th-degree impersonation of a law enforcement officer.
