- The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), alongside Eurojust, Europol and the federal police departments of France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Romania and Latvia, have shut down the global malware network Qakbot and seized over $8.6 million in illicit cryptocurrency profits.
- Qakbot, otherwise known as Qbot or Pinkslipbot, has infected computers through spam emails with malicious attachments or links for the past 15 years, and was seen as the botnet of choice for the most infamous ransomware gangs.
- Ransomware groups who have used Qakbot include Conti, ProLock, Egregor, REvil, MegaCortex and Black Basta.
- Computers infected by Qakbot will continuously download malware and ransomware without their users’ consent and will be remotely controlled by the perpetrators.
