Info: These scammers are “personal” scammers and will invite you to talk privately in a 1 on 1 chat. They claim things like “I don’t want to take your money, I just want to help you invest” or “This trading/investing platform made me so much money!”. The scam is they have you deposit cryptocurrency into “your account” on a fake crypto trading website. The “account” you sent the money to is actually the scammer’s wallet.
The red flags are numerous:
-
Someone DMs you or requests to be messaged privately. Real companies do not use individual private messages! NO MATTER WHAT!
-
You must “make a deposit into your account” by sending sending bitcoin or other currencies to a wallet address. NEVER send crypto to strange wallet addresses or to unknown people or strangers.
-
No ID, ToS, or payment method is provided. ALL popular trading sites have a ToS, require valid ID (over 18 years of age), and have you fund your account via a checking account. [Note: wallets do not require any of these things. Only download wallets from their official sources.]
-
The finer details: Scam websites often look clean, but a simple favicon missing, strange grammar, or something that does not look right on the website. Remember: Professional websites are, well, professional!
-
They ask for screenshots to “help you activate your account”. Companies never DM you. Scammers want screenshots to see if you are falling for the scam correctly.
-
Mess around with the website a little with inspect element. If you can make things happen that shouldn’t, then it is most likely a scam!
-
Don’t trust what isn’t secure! A website without a SSL certificate or an activation email that got sent to your spam folder is a clear red flag of a scam!
-
Lastly: NEVER trust a private message! NEVER send money to specific cryptocurrency address! Always search on Google for what you are looking for and select the most popular (choose a result that is not an ad)! BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!
