Recently, a family member was in search of a new dog and discovered a Facebook group dedicated to pet adoption. After joining the group, they came across a post from one of the moderators advertising local puppies. They contacted the moderator (later identified as a scammer) and requested photos, which were later reverse image searched and found to be easily searchable on Google. They also asked for references, but both responses had broken English. Despite these red flags, they decided to trust the moderator and sent a $150 deposit via Venmo.
Today, upon noticing the Venmo charge, I contacted my family member to inquire about their new dog. They expressed suspicions about the transaction. I then requested photos and upon receiving the first image, I used Google Lens which quickly revealed the exact photo from 2023. Subsequently, my family member requested a refund of the deposit and provided the evidence I had found. In response, they were blocked by the moderator and removed from the group.
After looking into the admins and moderators of this group, is managed by fake profiles, each using different pictures of various individuals.
