On January 16, 2026, the Bethlehem Police Department in Delmar, New York arrested 28-year-old Catskill resident Donovan May for facilitating a “phantom hacker” scam, where
- May would call victims under the false personation of a representative with the fraud department of Citizens Bank.
- Through an elaborate conversation on “fraudulent debit card charges,” May would gain access to his victim’s personal and banking information and later demand that the victim cut up their debit cards, put them in an envelope and send them to May via an Uber driver.
- With his victims’ banking details, he would then make several ATM withdrawals totaling over $22,000.
May is currently being held at the Albany County Jail and is due to be arraigned in court on February 17, where he will face up to 17 years in prison on charges of
- 3rd-degree grand larceny
- 1st-degree identity theft
- 4th-degree criminal possession of stolen property
