FAQ:
Q. What is a direct carrier billing scam?
A. A direct carrier billing scam is a type of fraud that occurs through the use of mobile payments. Scammers use direct carrier billing providers to bill unauthorized charges. This is a relatively unknown type of fraud. Direct carrier billing providers work with mobile carriers to bill the victim from their prepaid balance/postpaid plan. As long as the scammer knows the victim’s phone number and carrier, the victim can be fraudulently charged.
Notorious DCB scammers:
Movingos
Movingos claims to be a portal for entertainment. Movingos Canada uses the DCB provider Triton Global, which poses as PayByPhone. A message from 5349 will come to the victim’s phone like this: " The PayByPhone will charge you $30.00 CAD for a Movingos charge." There is also another similar message in French. Replying “ALLOW” will cause your phone bill to be charged, while replying “DENY” will stop the charge. Triton Global is at least better than some of the other DCB providers, some charge your phone immediately without requesting for confirmation, which allows scammers to easily abuse them.
