On July 15, 2025, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina arrested 58-year-old Crystal Brooks and 20-year-old Rudraksh Rawat for serving as money mules for an arrest warrant scam, where
- The scammers will call their victims under the false personation of law enforcement and threaten to arrest them due to an “outstanding warrant.”
- In order to avoid being “arrested,” the victims will be asked to withdraw $32,000 from their bank account and “safekeep” it in a Bitcoin ATM.
- Once the money is received, the scammer will demand additional money to be collected by a designated courier, or money mule.
Brooks and Rawat were charged with felony conspiracy and felony obtaining of property on false pretenses, but have since been bonded out of custody.
