On November 23, 2024, the Nassau County Police Department in Long Island, New York arrested 24-year-old Cristhian Ortega Rodriguez for attempting to scam an 83-year-old man over the phone by posing as their “grandson” and falsely claiming he was arrested and needed the victim to call his lawyer, “Larry Hays,” to hand off cash for bail. Rodriguez was arraigned on charges of third-degree larceny and resisting arrest, but was released with non-monetary conditions and will be expected back in court on December 2, 2024.
