Additional information about this scam:
My father-in-law received a phony popup this morning claiming that his computer was locked for “security” and he had to call “Microsoft support”. I had him shut off and turn back on his computer and the bogus message was gone, but not before I got a screen shot. Although I am not an experienced scambaiter I called the scammers and pretended to be a 90-year-old man who knew nothing and they gave me the usual litany of BS. I had an old Windows XP virtual machine I let them into via Ultraviewer and had the URL of fake bank. The upshot is that they wanted me to drive to my bank and withdraw $23,000 for “FTC security reasons” or some such nonsense. I quickly looked up some footstep, door, driving, and bank sound effects to play while pretending to go to the bank. Unfortunately they clued into what I was doing and hung up. Not sure what clued them into it, but I saw someone remotely looking at the PC hardware list and “VirtualBox” was the computer type so I figured the jig was up. I didn’t get a money mule address but at least kept them somewhat occupied for a few hours.
